It might seem unnecessary, since often times the effect you wanted to achieve has been achieved, but saving the detailed layer files as well as the output is smart, even though it will take up more space. You may someday need to change something, or in another project, you might want to do what you succeeded to do in one of the layers – so you won’t have to do it again.
